GALAX GTX 980 SOC Review | Benchmark

This one of the easy graphics card we have reviewed so far. For 2 reasons. One it doesn’t have an official Galax page so we are unsure what technology and enhancement they have made. Second reason is the card overclock out of the factory, this is great so people can buy one of the highest performing GTX 980 and slam it into the PC and do their editing/rendering instantly without the need to fiddle around with any overclocking software.

Looking at I/Os, it has 1 DVI-D port, 1 HDMI 2.0 port (max out at 4K 60Hz) and 3 Display Port (you can daisy chain few screen together). Looking at the backplate, one of the bad-ass looking ones out there, with the gamer edition, caution sign and the 900 series words on it. Is wish they had use the GTX 980 words instead of 900 series words. Backplate has lots of holes and there is a gap between the PCB and backplate which help with air ventilation (cool the card faster).

Looking at the side you have the Gamer logo, makes the card look cheap and I wish they when with their Galax logo instead. Power by 2 8pin as well. On the bottom you have 3 8cm fan when under load doesn’t make much noise (feelings like Gigabyte’s windforce fans). Annoyingly my PC fans make loud noise compared to the card, good job Galax. If you want illumination on the card you may want to run LED strips or use PC case with internal lighting.

For heat management it’s using 5 nickel plated heatpipes to distribute heat from the copper-nickel which is mounted on the GPU and other component; to the heatsinks on the card. From our test during hot day the max temperature hits 80 degrees celsius but once the card fan’s kick in the temperature only hover around 77/78 degrees celsius. Best part is the fans at load is much quieter than my CPU fans (repeat point here I know, but I have to emphasize on it 😀 )

The GPU is overclocked at 1228Mhz, boosted to 1329Mhz. 4GB GDDR5 Memory clock at 7083Mhz, 256-bit memory interface. Tomb Raider at 1080P Ultimate no AA gets average 118 fps, Witcher 3 High no AA gets average 77 fps and Crysis 3 Very high no AA gets 91 fps. Let’s move on to performance. 3D Mark benchmark, Ultra gets 3356 and Extreme gets 6238. To end this review, Simplicity and High Performance is the best policy. It know affordable to own a 900 series card with the arrival of 10 series cards, performance is still good for current generation of games.
