Plantronics RIG 500HD Review | Dolby Virtual 7.1 Surrround Sound
The 500 series headset is a modular gaming headset by Plantronics. The idea is to upgrade or replace certain part to suit your needs. The frames, (open/closed back and different driver sizes) earcups and cables can be used (or swap) between the 400, 500, 600, 800 series. So they can release an earcup upgrade in the future and you only pay for that one part, keeping cost lower provided they keep this ecosystem alive for years to come. Tho our focus would be the 500HD version today.
It is 200 gram, as most of the parts are made out of plastic. Build is durable, you can check our video review to see how we torture it. Sound isolation is do-able not the best because the earcup are sponge type, a leather (or PU leather) would further help block environmental sounds.
This is a Virtual Dolby 7.1 surround sound headset which is great for immersive movie and more importantly for gaming experience. It has 24 bit encoded audio which widen the soundstage a bit, great for listening and pin point enemies footsteps in game like Overwatch. The low to lower-mid frequency is top notch for sound effect in games regardless the gaming genre. For the microphone test do check our video review but yes is good, you won’t sound like a potato. The cable doesn’t touch the face during used as well.

Pia Mia – Do It Again
Bass is highly energetic and well bodied. Doesn’t eat into the vocals, the subtle vibration is eargasm and fade smoothly.
Tiaan – Be Ok
Low frequency no distortion, full of energy (feel the air pressure). The bass vibration fade ultra-mega smooth. Good body for the lows.
Ed Sheeran – Touch and Go
Vocals clarity is good throughout the range especially the vocal humming. Clear separation between vocal and instrumental. The guitar chords fades well and sound precise (more warm type than crystal clear type sound). The highs lack the shine but is a gaming grade so no biggy.
The best virtual headset I have heard and use so far, is really hard for a single 40mm driver to do virtual 7.1, many out there fails in either the low or mid, with the 500HD is well controlled at the low. The bass doesn’t have any distortion and vocal that doesn’t sound muted. Despite being marketed for gaming I spend out of my time using it to listen to music and online video content.
