Plantronics RIG 500HD review | Dolby Virtual 7.1 Surrround Sound
The 500 series headset is a modular gaming headset by Plantronics. The idea is to upgrade or replace certain part to suit your needs or time during replacement (rather buy an entirely new headphone/headset). The frames, (open/closed) earcups and cables can be interchange between the 400, 500, 600, 800 series. Our main focus would be the 500 HD version for this review. Latest pricing here Amazon/Shopee/Lazada.
This headphone is 200 gram lightweight. If Plantronics cut its weight by around 50 gram, this would be great for daily usage and traveling. The headphones grips thanks to the plastic frame that shapes around you head. Earcups is comfy but sound isolation is do-able because it is like faux leather but rather mesh type so you can heard some surrounding sounds.
The Virtual Dolby 7.1 surround sound headset is great for immersive movie and more importantly for gaming experience. It has 24 bit encoded audio (USB HUB) which widen the sound stage a bit, great for listening and you are able pin point enemies footsteps in game like Overwatch.

Pia Mia – Do It Again
The bass is energetic and it doesn’t eat into the vocals. The subtle vibration is an eargasm and it fades smoothly.
Tiaan – Be Ok
The low frequency has no distortion, it is full of energy and you can feel the air pressure booming.
Ed Sheeran – Touch and Go
The vocals clarity is good throughout the range. There is a clear separation between vocal and instrumental. The guitar chords fades well and it sounds precise.
The best virtual headset I have heard and use so far, is really hard for a single 40mm driver to do virtual 7.1, many out there fails in either the low or mid. The 500HD is well controlled at the low, you have the bass without distortion and vocals that doesn’t sound muted. Despite being marketed for gaming I spend out of my time using it to listen to music and online video content.
